A paradigm shift towards evidence based transfusion, Chandigarh, India 2023 April
A CME titled ‘Patient Blood Management – A paradigm shift towards evidence based transfusion’ was conducted on April 22, 2023 at Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh. This program was open to medical professionals from Transfusion Medicine and allied specialties, laboratory technologists and nursing officers working in various hospitals of North India to educate them about Patient Blood Management (PBM). This CME reflected collaboration between Transfusion Medicine physicians and clinicians from departments of Anaesthesia and Intensive care, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, and Hospital Administration.
First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the ISBT Academy and ISBT Central office for giving financial support for the organization of this event. We also place on record our gratitude to the faculty who contributed to the scientific program of this event.
The CME was attended by 116 delegates from the Northern part of India. Jasbinder Kaur, Director Principal, Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh inaugurated the event.
In the first scientific session, R.K. Chaudhary from Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute, Lucknow elaborated on the concept and pillars of PBM. R.R. Sharma from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh highlighted the feasibility of PBM in different clinical settings. Gita Negi from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh discussed the significance of PBM in pandemics.
The second scientific session included deliberations from clinical colleagues. Kajal Jain (Anaesthesia and Intensive Care department) elaborated on evaluation and management of pre-operative anemia, Prof. Meena Sidhu discussed about the role of point of care testing in PBM, and Navneet Takkar (Obstetrics and Gynecology deaprtment) talked about PBM in pregnancy and child birth.
The highlight of the event was a panel discussion involving specialists from departments of Anaesthesia and Intensive care, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Hospital Administration, and Transfusion Medicine. Strategies for implementation of PBM and potential challenges faced were discussed by the experts during the panel discussion.
The concluding session included free paper presentations in which young faculty from northern region of India (Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Rishikesh, and Faridkot) shared their experience of implementing PBM in their respective centres. The scientific programme and arrangements of the event were rated as 5 or 4 by 90% of the delegates.
